Legendary blades

Grand Gourmet Damasteel chef’s knife

Legendary blades wielding incredible power.

When the first crusaders invaded the Orient at the end of the 11th century, they were often met with a painful surprise: their enemies’ swords were superior to the European ones they were familiar with.

The swords, with their distinctive wavy pattern, were not only more flexible and robust, but also remained sharp for much longer.

WMF reinterpreted the secret of Damascus steel.

This took time, effort, and patience. A number of scientists conducted experiments on a range of different steel and other elements until they understood why Damascus steel blades could be flexible yet so sharp.

Once the secret was unveiled, they realized that they had a responsibility. They forged neither weapon nor munitions, but instead devoted themselves to hospitality. WMF has been producing perfect knives ever since.

A truly unique and powerful knife.

No two WMF Damascus steel knives are the same. Every single one is individually manufactured using a combination of different types of carbon steel, which tend to be very tough and resilient. The distinctive pattern is created by layering the steel but does not appear until the blade’s subsequent immersion in an acid bath.

Producing blades using the traditional Damascus steel forging technique can take several days per knife. During the process, the entire blade is shaped using a mechanical forging hammer until each individual knife is perfect.
The reputation and history of Damascus steel have given rise to many different legends, such as the blade’s ability to cut a silk scarf in half with the merest touch of the sword.
